Why we bake low and slow. Drying pet food at high temperature degrades nutrients. Research on extruded pet foods found that reactive lysine and several unsaturated long-chain fatty acids drop off in kibble dried at 200°C, and recommends drying below 160°C to limit the damage.1 We bake well under that ceiling. It takes longer and costs more, and it leaves more of the food intact.
